'It’s 5a.m. Time to get up and go to the gym. It’s also time to lay in bed, whine about the early hour, and try to figure out how many times you can push the snooze button before you absolutely need to get up. This is me. Like every day! The truth is, when we make the decision to change our lives in any way, especially making the change to be healthier, there will always be challenges and sacrifices. Whether it’s sleep, time, or your favorite indulgence, something’s got to give. Now, that sounds pretty bleak. In fact, it sounds downright awful! The question then becomes, “why should I give up these things I love and enjoy when it seems like I’m only getting misery in return?” For many people that’s a really tough question to face, and most of the time the answer ends up being “it’s not worth it.” So how do we make it worth it? How can we overcome those hard days, or those roadblocks that pop up along the way? This may seem overly simplified, but the answer is to truly and honestly ask yourself why. Why am I getting up early in the morning? Why did I pack my lunch full of vegetables? Why am I spending all this time doing something that isn’t exactly fun? There are a myriad of reasons, and you may be surprised by what your reason is. Maybe you work out so you can lose a bit of weight. Great! But is there any other reason? Maybe you make these hard changes so you can play and keep up with your children, or grandchildren. Maybe you change your eating habits so you avoid the heart disease that seems to run in your family. Maybe you just want to climb a flight of stairs without losing your breath. So ask yourself what matters most. Once you can identify that, ask yourself if this reason, this thing you value, is more or less important than sleeping in, or eating a cheeseburger, or any other comfort that seems hard to give up. I will readily admit that it is extremely difficult to keep to your goals sometimes. In those moments when you feel like giving up, stop and think back on the reason why you started in the first place, and ask yourself if you’re willing to give that up. Doing this won’t make the challenge or the sacrifice any easier, but it will help you get through those difficult moments and ultimately find success.
