'FOOD CITIES 2022: Strategies for Emergency Food Planning motivated by the pandemic'

'The first webinar in our series, Emergency Food Planning. This is the second series in the FOOD CITIES 2022 Learning Partnership. In this webinar, we focus on the spike in food insecurity due to increased poverty and inflated food prices. We will revisit Pune and Milan, which were featured in webinars in the midst of the pandemic, to hear about their progress and the ultimate impact of the pandemic on their food system.   Key takeaways from the webinar include: • Understanding how the pandemic drove more people into poverty and food insecurity • Estimating how long increased food insecurity might last given this type of disruption • Strategies for bolstering food safety networks to meet increased demand from any crisis • Policy interventions that address inflated food prices and systemic food insecurity  SPEAKERS  SYLVIE WABBES, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Ms. Wabbes is Agronomist and Resilience Advisor for the Resilience Strategic Programme in the Emergency and Resilience Office (OER) of the FAO of the United Nations. She will share her extensive knowledge of how disasters, crises and conflicts  are driving world hunger and discuss how a multi-risk and crisis management perspective is needed for building resilient food systems.  BOBBY ZACHARIAH, Lighthouse Communities, Pune, India  Mr. Zachariah has extensive, global community development experience with NGO’s, CSR and international agencies in disaster affected communities. From this broad perspective, he will revisit how Lighthouse Communities and other partners addressed food insecurity during the pandemic, their recovery efforts and the implications for future emergency food planning in the city.    ANDREA MAGARINI, Milan Food Policy Coordinator, Italy  Mr. Magarini is Chair of Eurocities Working Group Food and the Coordinator of the Milan Food Policy inside the Mayor’s Office where he facilitates the engagement of municipal agencies, philanthropic foundations, universities, social actors and the private sector for the implementation of actions on food innovation and resilience. From this rich perspective, he will revisit how the City of Milan addressed food insecurity during the pandemic and the implications for other cities developing emergency food plans.   This webinar series, launching June 23rd 2021, will give cities who are planning or beginning to develop a city food strategy practical information to inform and inspire their own strategies. We will explore the scope of a strategy, who can or should be involved in its development, practical policies and levers to enable food system transformation and how to implement your strategy so it delivers positive change.
